When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by travelers planning a trip to Vietnam. The short answer is 'It depends on which region you want to visit. 

 

Vietnam typically attracts tourists year-round across its popular destinations, with a spike in November and December mainly due to the Christmas Holiday Season. 

Best time to visit Northern Vietnam (Sapa, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Haiphong, Vinh)

In northern Vietnam, winters can be cold from December to February, with overnight temperatures sometimes dropping to 4 degrees Celsius. The summer months, from May to August, can become quite hot.

 

The best time to visit northern Vietnam is in the spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November), when the days are typically warm and sunny.

Best time to visit Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang)

The coast of central Vietnam can face typhoons from time to time during the wet season, with heavy rains and windy weather hitting coastal cities like Hoi An. Although it's challenging to predict exactly when these storms will occur, the typhoon season typically runs from August to November. By February, the rainy season usually subsides, bringing warmer temperatures and more sunshine.

Best time to visit Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Mekong, Phu Quoc Island)

The dry season typically spans from December to May, while the rainy season extends from June to November. Although flooding is rare, rain usually comes in brief bursts and seldom affects travel plans. In fact, the monsoon season (May to November) is often the best time for photography, with dramatic thunderheads drifting across the Mekong Delta and rice fields transforming into a vibrant emerald green.
